Bernard “Tink” Stennett made his mark in Mount Union’s blue and gold with two consecutive area rushing titles. As a junior in 1993, he ran for 1,829 yards, described by The Daily News as an area single-season record. He followed that with 1,527 yards as a senior in 1994, finishing his Trojan career with a then-school-record 3,511 net rushing yards on 487 carries—an average of 7.2 yards per carry.

His senior season included one of Mount Union’s memorable individual performances. On September 16, 1994, Stennett rushed for 298 yards on 21 carries in a 30–20 win over Penns Valley. He gained 217 yards after halftime and scored four touchdowns: three on the ground and one on a 56-yard pass from Andy Wertz. Mount Union’s football-record compilation credits him with 49 total touchdowns and 302 points over his high-school career.

All-conference at IUP

At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Stennett earned second-team All-PSAC West honors at running back in 1997, 1998 and 2000. In 2000, he also earned a second-team selection as a return specialist. He finished with 2,125 career rushing yards and led IUP in both scoring and all-purpose yardage in 1997 and 1998.

One of his strongest college outings came in October 2000, when he rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in IUP’s 27–3 victory over Edinboro. In the newspaper account afterward, Stennett credited his offensive line and fullback for their blocking. Later that season, injuries at quarterback brought a new assignment: the running back moved under center to help direct IUP’s offense.

IUP included Stennett in its Football 150 commemorative selection in 2019. From his record-setting Trojan seasons to his work as a college runner, returner and emergency quarterback, his football career remains a distinctive part of Mount Union’s athletic history.
